Underhill Historical Society – Tuesday, December 12th, 6:30 – Talk on John James Monahan – John Monahan had a diverse personal history that included serving as a Civil War soldier with the 1st United States Sharpshooters, lawyer, schoolmaster, Burlington Grand Juror, and as a soldier with the Fenian Brotherhood that invaded Canada after the Civil War. Monahan and his wife moved to Underhill in 1873 where he served at times as town clerk, postmaster, superintendent of schools, and state legislator. He served as commander of the local post of the Grand Army of the Republic (GAR), and as judge advocate of the state organization. With the death of his first wife in 1904, Monahan remarried and moved to Essex Center in 1907, where he died in 1910. Please join us for this informative evening. Light refreshments will be served.
