Banned Books Week: Dear Banned Author — Sunday, September 27th at 4 PM
In turbulent times, books are tools that help people navigate the world around them. Intellectual freedom and access to information uplift people in crisis and during more peaceful times, so help us champion the right to read during Banned Books Week, September 27 – October 3, 2020!
This program will focus on writing letters of encouragement and support to Banned Authors. The Top 10 Most Challenged Books of 2019 features a number of books that help readers, especially and specifically young readers, understand and navigate tough situations, including: George by Alex Gino; Beyond Magenta: Transgender Teens Speak Out by Susan Kuklin; and Drama by Raina Telgemeier. Frequently challenged books also include classics such as George Orwell’s 1984, Margaret Atwood’s The Handmaid’s Tale, and more contemporary fiction like J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter series.
See a book, series, or graphic novel that you love? Do you believe in the freedom of individuals to choose what they read? Show your support of Banned Authors in this letter-writing workshop. For a list of Banned Authors and their addresses, click here.
